Jobs cut at Gilmartin's Cash & Carry

Three long term employees are due to be made redundant from Gilmartin's Cash and Carry, Carrick-on-Shannon this month.

The news comes as their branch store in Castlerea closes it's doors in July with the loss of five staff. The sixty year old company which was set up by John Gilmartin holds it's headquarters in Carrick-on-Shannon.

There has been no indication of further job cuts in Gilmartin's Cavan and Claremorris stores.

The company have stated that following a detailed strategic review within the business, the company has come to the difficult decision that redundancies must be made in order for the business to continue. The rationale for the redundancies are the general downturn in the economy, but specifically a reduction of approximately 25% in turnover in all sites.

In a press statement to the Leitrim Observer, Managing Director of Gilmartins, Sean Gilmartin said, "John Gilmartin & Co operates in a very competitive business environment and must maintain a competitive cost base to remain profitable. Marketing conditions have changed dramatically over recent months, therefore we must realign the business to meet the current market conditions and restructure the staffing levels accordingly.

"We will start discussions immediately with the staff with regard to the redundancies. We very much regret the implications this decision will have for the employees and their family members. The owners have a strong commitment to this business and appreciate the efforts made by all the staff, especially over the last number of months."

The traditional family company is one of the largest wholesalers in the border, midlands and western region. The company once had five stores in the region but are now down to three as their Roscommon Town branch closed late last year.

Customers will be serviced from the branch in Carrick-on-Shannon with effect from the closure of the Castlerea branch.

Gilmartins wish to thank their customers for their continued support and assure them of their future commitment to their business.
