Junk food on the menu for local patients

Leitrim patients attending hospital in Sligo, Roscommon, Letterkenny or Galway can expect a selection of junk food on their dinner menu.

The sick and elderly in more than 100 public hospitals and nursing homes are being offered highly processed foods such as chips, battered sausages, frozen pizzas, potato waffles, pre prepared omelettes and scrambled eggs, and pies with just 10% meat, chicken nuggets and cod goujons. Residents in HSE run nursing homes in Leitrim and across the North West are also subject to the same selection of food.

The HSE are to buy almost 90 tonnes of frozen chips, 62,000 sausage rolls and other highly processed foods for patients in the public health system over the next four years.

The food on offer by the HSE are completely against the healthy eating guidelines published last Summer by the Department of Health, it recommends that such high fat foods should be avoided.

The Irish Heart Foundation described the HSE’s food order as “extremely concerning.”

Nutritionist Aveen Bannon said “It beggars belief that these type of products are going to go into hospitals where people are trying to get better.”
