Keshcarrigan doesn’t feel protected anymore

“Crime has increased in the area” of Keshcarrigan, Fenagh and Kiltubrid recently according to Cllr Francie Gilmartin. These remarks came on the closing day of Keshcarrigan Garda Station.
Two members of the Keshcarrigan Text Alert, Pamela Deane and Lorna McCarthy. said “we don’t feel protected anymore.” They added the presence of the local garda was a deterrent to perspective burglars.
The beautiful listed building in the village was built as an RIC barracks in the village in 1861 by Builder J O’Connell, according to an inscribed concrete block behind the building. From the rear of the stone building a small window gives evidence of an onsite prison cell.
According to locals the garda stationed here was the “eyes and ears of the community.”
Cllr Gilmartin said a number of break ins have been reported around the area over the past few weeks. He said he was very disappointed there was no replacement Garda stationed in Keshcarrigan during the absence of Gda Michael May. Cllr Gilmartin said Garda vetting forms should be signed by Gardai who know the individuals applying, but he asked “how are Carrick Gardai supposed to know locals?” He stressed Gardai stationed in Keshcarrigan “knew every house, every family, they were patrolling the area and prevented crime.”
