The ancient woodlands of Killegar are enchanting at any time but there is something about Autumn, being the ‘season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’, that makes them even more special.

This weekend you’ll be able to meet with some of the country’s leading nature and wildlife experts to learn about our natural and built heritage at The International Mushroom Festival at Killegar, Co Leitrim.

Experts from around the world will be travelling to the historic estate near Carrigallen on Saturday, October 13 and Sunday, October 14. They will explain which mushrooms are safe to eat, which are best avoided and all about the mysterious role of fungi in the forest ecological cycle.

For lovers of fine and foraged foods, celebrity TV Chefs Neven Maguire and Brian McDermott will be cooking up some warming Autumnal dishes for you.

They’ll also be offering advice and suggestions for young cooks selected from schools across the county as they take part in ‘Leitrim’s Young Chef of the Year’ for the chance to get a week’s work experience with Neven at MacNean House Restaurant.

It may not just be your imagination that Robin Hood and his merry men are hiding out in the woodlands when you see Dave Hodson, of Mircat Manufacturing, dressed in the uniform of a Brother Knight losing off a few arrows! If you’re one of the lucky ones, Dave might even give you the chance to try one of his ancient bows for yourself.

Rug up and join in the fun - forays will go ahead whatever the weather and there will be lots of places for you to take shelter and picnic should the heavens decide to open up.

Don’t miss out - see www.internationalmushroomfestival.com for details!
