Killenummery school first in county to raise Active Flag

St Joseph's NS, Killenummery, Dromahair became the first Co Leitrim school to be awarded the Active School Flag.

This prestigious award was received on May 5th 2010 in recognition of the school's efforts to promote physical activity and sport across both curricular and recreational aspects of school life.

The Active School Flag is a non-competitive initiative which highlights the importance of P.E, physical activity and sport in schools and communities in which they are based.

The initiative aims to empower schools to commit to a process of internal self-evaluation as part of a whole school process aimed at improving provision of physical activity in their school. It encourages a partnership approach and allows for schools to become more proactive in approaching groups like the HSE, Local Sports Partnerships and Education Centres.

The scheme, in existence for the past four years is run by Mayo Education Centre whose assessor Mr Eamon Mullen reviwed the school's action plan, curricular P.E plan and physical activity provision over the past year.

His report "confirmed and affirmed the hard work being done by an obviously dedicated team."

Many initatives were undertaken as part of the programme. Structured play activities were organised at break times which involved peer mentoring.

New sports were introduced to pupils including volleyball and rounders. St. Joseph's Parent's Association arranged Fun4All Sports Days in the local GAA park.

Pupils were brought on Adventuring and Orienteering Outings. Coaches from various sporting fields were enlisted to provide school-based sessions.

The school publicised and supported local sporting events. The school's parents played an active role in promoting and supporting all their efforts.

The Student Council, through their suggestion box invited, collated and implemented pupils's suggestions for playground activities. Mr Mullen was particularly glowing in his praise of this aspect of St. Joseph's programme.

While the staff organised the setting up of structured break-time activities, very soon the pupils themselves took over the management of these activities with minimal staff intervention and have continued in this vein since.

On Friday, June 25 the staff and pupils of St. Joseph's celebrated being the first Leitrim school to raise the Active Flag. Supported by the proud board of management, parents and community, special guest and local Leitrim senior footballer, Kevin Conlon raised the flag to the delight of all involved.
