Late 2012 start date for Rinn rowing facilities

Work is set to start on-site in late 2012 on the development of rowing facilities at Lough Rinn according to Leitrim County Council.

The project was approved by Council members at the June Council meeting and funding totalling €283,000 has already been sourced for phase 1 of the project.

The news came following a motion by Cllr Thomas Mulligan who sought clarification on when the development was expected to start and how long it was expected to take to complete.

Director of Service, Planning, Community and Economic Development, Joseph Gilhooly said it was “anticipated that works on site will commence during late 2012 and it is hoped that rowing, camping and ancillary facilities will become available for use in mid 2013.”

Cllr Mulligan welcomed this “badly needed development” noting it had been quite a few years since such an investment had been seen in the area.

Cllr Enda Stenson also welcomed the news paying tribute to the work of everyone involved in the project. “This is a huge piece of infrastructure for Lough Rinn and Mohill. When complete it will be amongst the best courses in Ireland,” he said.

County Manager, Jackie Maguire, said that the development had huge potential for the future development of the area on a regional and national basis.

“So we’ll be pursuing that and exploring all the avenues to secure funding for the next phase of the project,” she said.

Cllr Sean McGowan also warmly welcomed the plans, describing it as an exciting proposal for the area “with enormous potential for the whole of Co Leitrim”.

“It is hoped that the site when developed will be used by members of the Rowing fraternity for training purposes, as they prepare for major competitions such as the National, European and Olympic Games.

It also has the potential to attract both National and International rowing events to Leitrim. It will also compliment the magnificent Lough Rynn Castle hotel, which has been developed in recent years,” he added.

Clrs John Ward and Sinead Guckian also welcomed the news.
