The North Leitrim Women’s Centre celebrated International Women’s Day last Friday March 8, with the launch of the ‘Voices for Change’ Community Choir in the ‘Glens Centre’ in Manorhamilton.

The event which was a great success and those present were treated to a wonderful, uplifting first public performance by the ‘Voices for Change’ Women’s Choir.

The Voices for Change Programme is a joint project between the North Leitrim Women’s Centre and the CONCENSUS Initiative and has been supported by the EU’s PEACE III Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body.

Rosaleen Gallagher said on behalf of the CONCENSUS programme, that they were delighted to be involved in supporting the “‘Voices for Change” choir programme promoting sustainable communities, participation and peace & reconciliation. The group is extremely diverse and has undertaken a programme to consider equality and community development as a part of the project.

This performance and the future work of the Choir aims to raise awareness of the issues affecting women locally. The wider aim of the project is to build links on a cross border basis and will have a wide impact on community relations on a number of levels.

Assumpta Kelly from the North Leitrim Women’s Centre said the choir was ‘a wonderful way for women to come together and work together to raise awareness of issues, celebrate achievements and inspire action through the power of song’. It is hoped the Choir will continue to go from strength to strength and offer women in the locality a space to explore their talents, build friendships and find a voice together.

Anyone interested in finding out more about the Choir or would like to get involved contact the North Leitrim Women’s Centre in Manorhamilton on 071 9856220.
