Leitrim fares well in the county price wars

We all know it pays to shop around, but how much exactly? Despite out moans and groans about the high prices, Leitrim is one of the cheapest counties to live in and with our close proximity to Dublin, Sligo and Northern Ireland we actually have some of the most competitive prices in the country.

Last week the Irish Independent did a survey on different prices around the country.

It combined original research with the latest data from top consumer groups to separate the most expensive places from the best counties for spending your cash.

The cheapest fuel prices seem to be found near the main road routes especially close to the border. Co Cavan came out on top in this region with two filling stations in Beltubet in the top five cheapest petrol polls last week.

The average price for a litre of petrol in Leitrim was 131.9c and 123.9c for diesel last week. The cheapest price for petrol in the county was 130.9c and 122.9c for diesel. Cavan boasts the lowest price around with 126.9c for petrol and 118.9c for diesel according to pumps.ie

Property wise, the cheapest homes in Ireland are in Longford, where the average three-bed semi-d can be snapped up for €143,000, not far behind is Roscommon (€145k), Leitrim (€148k) and Cavan (€156k) according to the latest Daft.ie report.

The dearest homes are Dublin at €308,800, followed by Wicklow (€301k), Cork (€238k) Galway (€236k) and Kildare (€236k).

Other trivias which Leitrim fared average in, but you can compare locally include the cost of dry cleaning. The average cost of dry cleaning a suit is €14.70, Dublin southsiders have to fork out €20 for the same service.

South Dubliners also get ripped off at the dentists, the National Consumer Agency found it costs €336 on average for four basic procedures there, including examination, scale and polish, extraction and combined scale and polish. The cheapest was Waterford, where the average price for those procedures came to just €239.

The average cost for a GP visit ranged from p46.36 in Tralee/ Killarney to €52.81 in Waterford.

A run of the mill haircut can cost men as little as €4.99 - while women can blow 30 times that much!

The good news is that the recession is forcing prices down - as shown by the latest NCA survey, which reveals a 14pc drop in grocery prices, but consumer agencies are still advising everyone to "shop around," watch out for promotions locally and watch your euro stretch further.
