Leitrim VEC briefs

The following matters arose at the October 19 meeting of Leitrim VEC.

BTEI

The Back to Education initiative in Leitrim received p98,000 for the year 2009. CEO of Leitrim VEC John Blunnie informed VEC members that 350 students of the BTEI are due to graduate this year.

Assessment grant

Leitrim VEC were awarded p8,000 from the Department of Education for the provision of assessments and exams for students on VETEC courses in the county.

VEC elections

CEO of Leitrim VEC John Blunnie will be acting as Returning Officer for the upcoming election for Community, Parent and Staffing representatives on Leitrim VEC.

The closing date for nominations was Wednesday, October 21 and elections will be held in Vocational Schools throughout the county on November 6.

Connacht Fleadh 2010

Leitrim VEC has agreed to allow Mohill and Drumsna Comhaltas the use of Mohill Community College as a venue for Connacht Fleadh events on July 3 and 4, 2010.

St Joseph's Special Needs School

Cllr Enda McGloin requested an update on the position of Marion College to receive the St Joseph's Special Needs Class. CEO of Leitrim VEC, John Blunnie told the members that John Farrelly from Aughavas had been awarded the contract to fit the school with specifications for the special needs class and although some problems had been encountered with the building, it is anticipated that work will be finished at the end of October or early November.

Members of Leitrim VEC expressed their best wishes to absent member Ita Flynn who is in hospital with pneumonia. The members wish Ita a speedy recovery.

Congratulations

Cllr Paddy O'Rourke said he wished to congratulate the Principal of Carrigallen Vocational School, Declan Conboy and his wife on the birth of their baby boy recently.
