Leitrim votes Yes in Children’s Referendum
Both Leitrim constituencies passed the Children’s Referendum at the weekend, with a dismal turn out by the electorate in each location.
There were over 1,200 votes in the difference in the Roscommon- South Leitrim count, 10,889 voted Yes (52.8%) and 9,886 voted No (47.08%).
While in Sligo-North Leitrim the Yes camp won by over 2,300 votes (56.3%), while the No vote accounted for 43.7% of the voters.
Roscommon-South Leitrim had a turn out of 33.8% of the electorate, while it was slightly lower in Sligo-North Leitrim with 31.4% making an effort to cast their vote.
There were 85 spoiled votes recorded in Roscommon-South Leitrim, while Sligo- North Leitrim had 99 votes that could not be counted.
The low turnout and the slight preference for the Yes side was reflected around the country. The amendment to the Children’s Bill was passed with 515,731 votes in favour compared to 445,883 against.
Donegal was the only county to buck the trend and vote No in both it’s constituencies.
Taoiseach, Enda Kenny along with all the main parties welcomed the passing of the children’s referendum nationally, which was passed by a vote of 57.4 to 42.6%.
The prospect of a legal challenge to the result is on the cards in light of the Supreme Court ruling that the State has misused public money on it’s information campaign.
