Leitrim schools score well on third level progression

A survery by the Irish Times has shown that Co Leitrim schools fare particularly well in the amount of Leaving Cert students that progress to third level education in 2008.

Lough Allen College, Drumkeerin and Marian College, Mohill both had 100% of their Leaving Cert students finding positions at third level, putting both schools into the top 25 nationally for schools with less than 50 Leaving Cert students.

Fatima & Felim's Secondary School in Ballinamore had a 98% record which also places it in the top 25 non-fee paying feeder schools.

Mohill Vocational School had a 96% progression rate, St Clare's Comprehensive, Manorhamilton 88%, Carrick-on-Shannon Community School 86%, Carrigallen Vocational School 58%, and Drumshanbo Vocational School 42%.

Mr David Harding, Principal of Lough Allen College, said, "It is a wonderful achievement for our college and is testimony to the dedication of parents, teachers and students to education. The results are also reflective of our young people's desire when given the chance to progress themselves academically.

"Our young students are well aware in these hard economic times of the importance of a extensive broad education and are prepared when given the chance to work hard to achieve such an education. The challenge facing all schools now is to provide as broad an education as is possible and appropriate for all students in a safe and secure environment.

"Going to third level is not the path for everybody but it is important for all students to achieve the highest standard they can.

"Lough Allen College will continue as always to provide for all its students; those who progress to third level and for those whose path in life leads in a different but equally valid direction."
