McCartin welcomes 70% reduction in crime
Cllr John McCartin has welcomed the reported 70% reduction in crime rates in the south east of Leitrim, something he attributes to the establishment of a number of linked text alert schemes.
Speaking to the Observer following last Monday’s joint policing committee meeting, Cllr McCartin said that “a clear message has been sent to the crime world that when we stand together, we can achieve great things.”
The Ballinamore area councillor praised community leaders and the Gardai for the cooperative and constructive way in which the text alert schemes were conceived and implemented.
“These schemes are community initiatives that are supported by the Gardai and it’s the synergy between these two entities that has yielded these spectacular results” he said.
“It is a credit to those who instigated and promoted the establishment of the text alert schemes that crime has dropped so dramatically,” he said.
Cllr McCartin added that he regarded “the closure of five Garda stations in the county as a retrograde step”.
