Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring TD, paid a visit to Co Leitrim last Thursday to view some of the facilities that have benfitted from his department’s grant funding in recent times.

By Donal O’Grady

Minister Ring was joined by a large number of politicians to view the improved facilities in Aura Leitrim Leisure in Carrick-on-Shannon and at Drumshanbo Outdoor Swimming Pool and Recreation Area.

He later performed the official opening of McGuire’s Self-Catering Holiday Cottages and Jinny’s Bakery in Drumshanbo.

Minister Ring saw at firsthand how funding of €396,520 was used at Aura Leitrim Leisure towards an energy upgrade and improved disabled access.

Aura has installed a new 320Kw woodchip biomass boiler to replace the existnig oil boilers as its primary source of heating which allows them to save up to €300 a day on their heating costs. A whole range of new upgrades have taken place throughout the building including highly efficient LED lighting, a new energy monitoring system and circulating pumps, pool cover, pool water recovery system, automatic doors, turnstiles, etc.

Minister Ring paid tribute to his colleague Deputy Frank Feighan and to County Manager, Jackie Maguire who described Aura as “great partners” and said this funding is “a huge long-term investment in the complex.”

Minister Ring said he would report back to the department about how well the allocation has been spent.

He spoke about how important tourism is to the county and how important facilities like Aura are to attracting tourism to the area.

The Minister said that the Sports Capital Grants has had 1,600 requests online already in the first week of the scheme. In 2008, there were 600 in total.
