Mohill gearing up for 21st Annual National Culchie Festival

Ireland's Original Culchie Festival will take place in Mohill, Co Leitrim from October 22 -24.

This is a very special year in the history of the festival as we will be celebrating our 21st birthday and we are calling on all culchies to come help us celebrate this unique event which now ranks highly in the calendar of festival events in Ireland.

The festival will also share the platform in Mohill with the well established and highly popular Annual Horse Fair on Sunday 24th.

Starting in Clonbur, Co Galway in 1989 with the selection of our very first King Of The Culchies Cowboy Jack Holian, the festival has visited many counties in it's search for this unique specimen of manhood 'The Original Culchie'.

This character we seek is a natural entertainer who will go to all extremes to entertain a gathering of his kin folk and others no matter how big or small that gathering.

Not to be taken for granted our original culchie has the capabilities of turning the tables on those who may try to underestimate his abilities and will handle most challenge's that will be put to him throughout the weekend of the festival with ease.

These challenges will be drawn from the now infamous 'Fionn Mac Cumhaill Challenge' and will see all aspiring heirs to the throne take on Fionn's biding as he sets about putting them through their paces with challenges such as,welly throwing, potatoe picking, nappy changing, bulling, turf footing, tractor racing, poetry and a two hour session in the school classroom on Saturday morning with many more on the spot tasks.

He will not however face these challenges alone as he will be assisted by his escort or partner who will be appointed to him at the Bacon & Cabbage Ball which will take place on Friday 22nd.

Looking for Leitrim's first Super Gran

The festival will also be looking to find Leitrim's first Super Gran and we would ask you to nominate your Gran to compete for this title.

Your entries(with a short note telling us why your Gran is the best in Leitrim) should be sent to the Leitrim Observer, or Clark'es Hotel in Mohill not later that October 1st and your Gran (and a partner or friend) could be one of the ten contestants joining us at the Bacon & Cabbage Ball on Friday 22nd of October.

Sunday will see the selection of the Junior Culchie and of course The Annual Great Honda Step-Thru Run (The Original of the species) which is now in it's sixth year and raised over €136,000 for various charities will leave the Mart in Mohill at 11-30am on Sunday 24th for a scenic drive through the bye roads and villages of Lovely Leitrim.

This year we are once again raising money for Alzheimer's and our second charity will the Parents & friends of children with Diabetes. Check in time 8am-10.30am. Entries will be taken on the day with a minimum registration fee of p30 per bike.

Keep an eye on the Leitrim Observer in the coming weeks for more on the Culchie Festival.
