Moone Boy shines light on Boyle

Moone Boy has brought the 90s backs, it has pushed Irish comedy to the fore again and it is making a tourist destination out of Boyle.

Accommodation website Hotels.com has said that searches for hotels in Boyle and Co Roscommon have almost tripled in the last 12 months thanks to the publicity and popularity of Moone Boy.

Carrigallen’s David Rawle, Boyle native Chris O’Dowd and the rest of the Moone Boy cast have been taking Ireland and UK by storm with their family friendly, laugh out loud comedy.

If you have not seen Moone Boy yet, then you are missing out. But aside from the nostalgia and the inside Irish jokes, Moone Boy is promoting and marketing Boyle.

From the opening credits where an X marks the spot of Boyle on a map of Ireland, to the scenes and remarks about the town in the comedy, O’Dowd has bypassed all traditional means of marketing and publicising his home town.

Hotels.com have revealed that UK website searches for Roscommon between September and October are up 185% on the same period last year. While searches within Ireland are up 27% during the same period.

Kate Hopcraft for hotels.com said: “It’s not uncommon for TV programmes or films to help boost a destination’s popularity.

“We have seen this happen before with films such as Sex and the City, Mamma Mia and even TV programmes such as The Only Way is Essex and Made in Chelsea.

“Moone Boy has been really well received in the UK and Ireland so it’s great to see that this seems to be having a knock-on effect for tourism in the county.”

More accommodation providers may be needed to cope with the interest in the historic town, but until that can be sorted, Carrick-on-Shannon will no doubt be delighted to take any overflow.
