Need for strong hospital structure
Senator Marc MacSharry.
Fianna Fáil Seanad Spokesperson on Health, Senator Marc MacSharry, has written to the Taoiseach and the Minister for Health to stress the importance of maintaining a strong hospital structure in the North West region.
He made the call ahead of a report on restructuring hospital groupings, which is due to be published this month.
“I understand the report will say that while Sligo Regional Hospital and Letterkenny General Hospital need to be linked to a major tertiary centre like UCHG, special consideration must be given to hospitals in the North West region,” Senator MacSharry said.
“The North West has unique geographical challenges when it comes to health services provision. Sligo and Letterkenny hospitals provide a range of acute services to a 250,000 people, dispersed across a vast region. The challenges this brings are unlike those facing hospitals in urban hubs. It is critical, in the interests of patient care, that we have a specific governance system for the North West, made up of representatives of the relevant stakeholders in this region.
“To group Sligo and Letterkenny with UCHG without providing such a structure will seriously undermine our hospitals’ ability to meet the healthcare needs of people across the North West. I have written to the Taoiseach and the Health Minister. The Government must take this recommendation seriously in order to protect patient care in this region.”
