This year, 2013, marks 400 years since Carrick-on-Shannon, with its a unique history and geographic locatio,n was awarded its charter by King James I.

On Friday, February 15 th the town will come together to launch a program of events to mark this historic occasion. The programme will be launched by His Excellency, President Michael D. Higgins and will take place on Friday afternoon. We hope that people will attend from all parts of the community.

The official launch by President Higgins will be followed by entertainment, which will include music and dance from local choirs and dance groups, there will be a lantern parade with local school children. At the Quayside where there will be a countdown to the official opening of the programme. This will followed by a fireworks display.

Carrick-on-Shannon 400 Programme

The 400th anniversary celebrations will see a full calendar of events covering music, heritage, the arts, sport and other community initiatives. In conjunction with the Gathering 2013 programme which is being run by Fáilte Ireland; natives of Carrick on Shannon and the counties of Leitrim and Roscommon will be encouraged to return home and share in the celebration.

The launch of the Carrick on Shannon 400 programme heralds the start of what will be an exciting year for the town. Among the events taking place are The Connacht Fleadh, Carrick-on-Shannon Water Music Festival, The Arts & Cultural Awards, The International John McGahern Seminar, The Carrick on Shannon Children’s Literary Festival, a Millennium Choir Event and The Hup! Festival. There will also be a number of sporting events including a 10K run, the Carrick-on-Shannon 400 SEVENS, The Head of the Shannon and the Regatta.

A number of exhibitions of a historical nature are also taking place at St George’s Heritage and Visitor’s Centre. In this the year of The Gathering, The Leitrim Roots Festival will also take place in Leitrim in September. You can see from this extensive list that there will definitely be an event in the programme to suit everyone. Carrick-on-Shannon looks forward to a year of events that will help to show Leitrim in its best light.
