Over two weeks ‘lost’ to absenteeism in Council

According to the Irish Independent, in Leitrim County Council there are, on average, 11 certified days of absenteeism per employee on top of their annual holiday leave and a further average of two 1.5 additional uncertified days per year, per employee.

This accounts for a total average of 12.5 days lost per employee to absenteeism in our local authority.

Figures show that on average nationally, 11.5 days are lost each year in local authorities through illness. In the private sector, the average is just six days a year.

Employers’ group IBEC said the high rate of absenteeism was because a culture had arisen in some area where people believed they were entitled to take sick leave.
