Principals express satisfaction with this year's Leaving Cert results

Students from across Co Leitrim received their Leaving Cert results last Wednesday amid a welter of excitement as points were tallied and options considered.

Once again, school principals in the county's schools expressed their satisfaction with this year's results.

Carrick-on-Shannon Community School Principal Adrian Jackson professed himself happy with the results.

"The feeling from both pupils and teachers is that we are very happy with the results. I am quite pleased from the point of view of the work put in by the staff during the year and the students also seem to be happy.

"We have had one or two big results and I'm very pleased that the results reflect the effort put in by both the pupils and the staff."

Mr Jackson also reminded pupils that their success had many contributory factors and praised the role of parents.

"I would ask that students might remember their parents and family who put a lot of effort into helping them achieve this result and perhaps they might take a bit of time to thank them and to celebrate with them. We never do any exam on our own, there are always people around to support us."

Principal of Lough Allen College, Drumkeerin, David Harding said the school got "another set of fantastic results which reflects tremendously well on the ffort put in by the students, teachers and parents."

Lough Allen College had 33 students sitting the Leaving Cert this year and according to David, a substnatial number got in excess of 500 points.

This, he said, retains the school's position as one of the top 25 schools of its size in the country, and the top school in Co Leitrim.

He confirmed that the "vast majority" of their students will continue on to third level of some form or another.

He said there is increased demand at this time for third level places and stated it was very important that the government create additional post-Leaving Cert places to meet that demand.

Principal of Ballinamore PPS, Padraig Leyden paid tribute to the school's students who received their results last Wednesday saying, "We're all very pleased, it is a good day for almost everybody.

"The people who worked hard got outstanding results."

Although reluctant to discuss individual results, Padraig noted some students achieved points results in the high 500s.

In total 65 students sat their Leaving Cert in the school this year and Padraig stated "The English results seemed particularly high."

While nationally the Maths results were reported as being disappointing, Padraig reported that trend was reversed in Ballinamore where the results were said to be "excellent."

Padraig added, "I haven't compared statistically, but the results seem comparable with last year. I haven't noticed any drop, I'm very pleased."

Drumshanbo Vocational School Principal, Martin Fallon was also pleased with the results obtained by the 44 students who sat the Leaving Cert saying, "Overall, management is pleased with the results.

"Students that worked consistently were well rewarded. Many of this year's class have decided to defer places at third level for a year until they complete the PLC course at the school.

Paying tribute to the Leaving Cert class of 2010, Mr Fallon said, "Well done to the students!"

Students who may be unsure with regards the options available to them were reminded advice is on hand from the school. "The school's career guidance teacher, Mr John King will be available in the coming days to advise students on their options," said Mr Fallon.

Mr Fallon also reserved a mention for those who helped the students along the way saying, "Congratulations and thanks are also due to the parents and the teachers."

The reaction from Mohill was equally positive with School Principal, Una Duffy saying, "Mohill Community College is delighted with the Leaving Certificate results achieved by our students this year and congratulates all on that achievement."

Ms Duffy explained, "A large group of students represents a broad range of abilities and it is always gratifying when students perform in accordance with that ability.

"It is not easy in the current economic climate to keep motivation alive but we are happy to see our students doing well and wish them success in the offer of college places next week.

MS Duffy also paid tribute to the teachers at Mohill Community College saying, "Congratulations is due also to our team of excellent teachers who worked so hard with their students."

Declan Conboy Principal, Carrigallen Vocational School, said the staff and students of the school are delighted with the results achieved in this year's Leaving Certificate.

"The students are confident of achieving their preferred options for Third Level Colleges and Universities," he said.

"I would like to take this opportunity to wish the students all the best in their future careers and to thank the staff for the excellent work that they continue to do in Carrigallen Vocational School."

St Clare's Comprehensive School Principal, John Irwin said the 80 students who sat the Leaving Cert fared "brilliantly."

Mr Irwin proudly reported there was a 100% pass rate and added "the top girl got 585 points."

It was also noted by Mr Irwin that the Science and Maths results were "excellent."

He paid tribute to the school's teachers saying, "I'd like to thank the staff for their continuous hard work and wish the students all the best for the future."
