Protest rallies against education cutbacks

Parents from across County Leitrim are being urged to join with teachers in attending the protests taking place against the cutbacks in education proposed in the Budget.

Huge cuts have been made in education and the most vunerable, children, are being severely affected. The pupil/teacher ratio has been increased, book grants axed and substitution cover for teachers abolished. It will mean hardship for pupils and indeed for families already hit by the economic downturn.

The INTO have organised a major protest rally in Donegal town for all members of the education community in each parish. It takes place on this Saturday, November 29, assembly at 1.30pm approx. Transport will be provided and your local national school has all the information.

It is vital that parents, teachers, pupils, Parents' Associations and Boards of Management, express their anger at these cutbacks which will have a detrimental effect on every child's education.

A national protest rally is due to take place in Dublin on Saturday, December 6. If there is sufficient commitment, the Parents' Association of Carrick Community School will organise a return coach from Carrick-on-Shannon to Dublin to participate in the rally.

The projected cost per head for coach hire to be approximately w11 per person. Participation is open to all who wish their voices to be heard. Details of the rally will be supplied.

As a matter of urgency (deadline Monday, December 1), please contact Micel Guckian (071-9620261) or Finola McGuire (086-3169754) to book your place.

"This appears to be the final opportunity to bring the people's dissatisfaction to Government attention and to ensure that the best educational opportunities for our children are in place," a spokesperson for the Parents' Association said.

Community School Principal, Joe Flynn estimates that the school will be down €100,000 when the loss of grants for various courses and projects and the reduction of teachers comes into effect in January, and this shortfall will have to be made up by parents.
