In Ireland, more than one young person dies from an undiagnosed heart condition each week. The Mater Heart Appeal raises funds for the Mater Hospital’s Family Heart Screening Clinic, where relatives of loved ones, who have died from SADS (Sudden Adult Death Syndrome) or survived a Sudden Cardiac Arrest, can be screened for undiagnosed heart conditions.

Just 12 months ago the communities of Kilclare, Kiltubrid and Mohill were stunned by the death of Sandra Earley, a fiancee, mother, daughter, sister and friend.

Sandra was one of those who had died from SADS and because of this a massive run/walk was held at Kilclare on Sunday in memory of her and to raise money for the Heart Appeal at the Mater Foundation.

Although a poignant day in many regards it was also a day that saw people of all ages - from babies in buggies to those in their latter years - taking to the road to remember one their own.

Encouraged by Kevin Blessing from Ocean FM and local Alan Clarke with Clarlene Mulligan from Rhythm Fit Dance in Mohill providing the warm up it was a case of the fittest at the front as those running and walking the 10 km route took off.

It was then the turn of the more staid among the 1,000 people who took part in the 4km walk/run.

The first man home was Killian Henry in a time of 36.42 followed by Graham Allen in a time of 37.28. The first lady home was Sinead Fowley Kelly in a time of 40.02 minutes.

Sandra’s brother Mickey paid tribute to all those who had come on board to help organise the event and most especially those who took part in the day.

Mickey later told the Observer that as of last Monday w13,000 had been collected but with cards still to be returned they expected the figure to hit w15,000. This was a massive achievement for all involved as the original aim of the organisers was to raise w5,000.

For Barry, her fiancee. Latisha, Jodie, Layla, her daughters, Johnny her father and for her family this was a day which showed in no uncertain terms the esteem in which Sandra is held and how much she is missed as part of the community.
