Serious action to be taken on the failure of broadband roll out
The issue of broadband coverage in the county came into focus at the March meeting of Leitrim County Council.
Sinn Fein Cllr Martin Kenny told the members he had received correspondence from eircom concerning broadband in the Carrigallen area.
He said ericom said "there is a lot of work to be done in Carrigallen to bring it in line with other areas" in the county.
Cllr Kenny proposed that the council push strongly for this work to be carried out urgently as "broadband is vital."
He also said "it is not good enough for them to refer to their competition" in relation to ericom noting that 3G covered the area in question.
Cllr Paddy O'Rourke said the written response from eircom was "vague."
He noted that in September 2007 John O'Malley from eircom had given the Council meeting a number of target dates for the roll out of broadband in Leitrim, Cllr O'Rourke said those dates have not been made and that was "disrespectful" to their commitment.
Cllr Caillian Ellis mentioned that there was also no broadband in the Cloone area and he said eircom have a station located in Cloone so he didn't see what the problem was.
It was pointed out at the meeting that the lack of broadband did not help the county in attract new jobs and businesses.
Director of Service, Community, Cultural and Enterprise Development, Joseph Gilhooly told the members that there is currently 13 providers of broadband available in Leitrim but that their coverage can be "fragmented."
The members asked for serious action to be taken in relation to this issue.
