Traffic concerns raised after Carrick 400 launch

Cathaoirleach, Cllr Enda Stenson has urged the Council to put in place a traffic management plan and ensure that meetings are held between all stakeholders on both sides of the bridge in Carrick-on-Shannon after traffic problems were experienced at the recent launch of the Carrick-on-Shannon 400.

Speaking at the March monthly meeting, Cllr Stenson paid tribute to those involved in the launch but noted that traffic tailbacks, especially on the Boyle side of the town were a downside of the event’s success.

He put forward a motion calling for a meeting with Leitrim County Council, Roscommon County Council and the Gardai involved in Traffic Management on both sides of the Bridge in Carrick-on-Shannon before future events take place.

The Director of Service, Planning, Community and Economic Development pointed out that meetings were held in advance of the Carrick-on-Shannon 400 event opening ceremony and “concerns raised were foreseen and highlighted”.

“The Gardaí provided an excellent service on the day to assist with maintaining traffic flow as efficiently as possible. Unfortunately the President’s schedule did not permit alternative timing of the event, which may have eased traffic issues on the day given that the event took place on Friday afternoon and early evening,” he admitted.

“The Gardaí have assigned a Liaison Officer for Carrick on Shannon 400 and it is imperative that each organisation hosting an event liaises with both the Gardaí and the Area Office of Leitrim County Council well in advance. This advance planning is critically important to the efficient and safe delivery of the individual events.”
