Two men suspected of human trafficking released from custody
The two men who were held in Co Leitrim on suspicion of being involved in human trafficking were released at the weekend.
Three people were arrested last Thursday, November 19 on suspicion of being involved in human trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation.
Detectives from the Garda National Immigration Bureau in conjunction with local Garda divisions arrested a member of the Gardai and another man in Sligo under the Criminal Law (Human Trafficking) Act.
The 53-year-old Garda who was held in Carrick-on-Shannon Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, was released Friday evening, November 20.
The other man in his early 50s was brought to Manorhamilton Garda Station and was also released last Friday, as well as an African woman in her mid-30s who was released after questioning at Coolock Garda Station, Dublin.
Gardai were investigating claims that women were being trafficked into the country and sent into prostitution. They believe a sex ring was operating in a number of western counties.
The Garda Press Office confirmed to the Leitrim Observer that all three have been released and “a file has been sent to the DPP” who will determine if criminal charges should be brought against the three people. No further information was available.
