Two outstanding Leitrim restaurants receive prestigious reviews
The Oarsman, Carrick-on-Shannon dispelled any talk of doom and gloom from it's doors recently when they received two prestigious accolades: an entry in the Irish Times Restaurant List 2009 and a coveted place in the Michelin Eating out in pubs guide 2010.
Stamping their position as having the best pub food in the county, having their restaurant's name in both of these food bibles has only cemented the much talked about Oarsman as one of the top ranking places to eat in the country.
Only 17 pubs in Ireland made it into the Michelin Eating out in Pubs Guide 2010 so the fact that the Oarsman has kept their place from last year really is a testament to the food, service and staff of the Oarsman.
The Oarsman joined the newly opened Riverbank Restaurant, Dromahair as the only two Leitrim restaurants to make it into the Irish times 100 Restaurant List last month. The food critic tom Doorley said the Oarsman's quality of food "definitely qualifies as gastropub." He highlighted the Oarsman's local produce and creative menus and even the colourful characters they attract into the pub!
Conor Maher co-owner of the Oarsman with his brother Ronan said they were "delighted" to remain in the Michelin Eating Out in Pubs Guide 2010 for the fourth year. This consistency in high standards of food preparation, presentation and service is all down to "hard work, dedication, local ingredients, producers and a strong team of loyal staff," according to Conor.
While some pubs fell short of the high ranking Michelin guide for next year, the Oarsman stood strong and Conor said this was due to their quality produce and their ability "to raise the bar and provide a food experience as well as good value for money."
Also in the top 100 Irish Times Restaurant list was the exceptional Riverbank Restaurant, Dromahair which has only been opened four months in it's current location.
Speaking to the Leitrim Observer before the list was published the Head chef and proprietor had expressed his delight at the news and had signalled out three key ingredients responsible for their success, "Consistency, a good team and hard work."
Food critic Doorley said the Riverbank Restaurant has a "lot of character" and said the chef's cooking style is "varied and electric, you get the idea that chef John Kelly is somewhat Italian at heart."
