Youth (16) injured by car on Junior Cert results night

Gardai in Carrick-on-Shannon are seeking the help of the public after a 16 year old from east Galway was seriously injured when he was hit by a car on the R280 outside Cartown last night (Wednesday). Gardai would particularly like to hear from two people who contacted them in relation to people walking on the road - one of those callers was a woman from Leitrim Village.

The youth was transferred to Sligo General Hospital and his injuries were described as “not life threatening.”

Gardai also confirmed that “a number of children were taken to hospital as a result of the consumption of illicit substances.”

The Junior Cert results celebrations attracted a crowd of between 1,500 and 2,000 youths who travelled from a very wide catchment area including east Galway, Cavan, Athlone and Ballyshannon.

In total there were 24 members of An Garda Siochana on duty at the event in Carrick-on-Shannon while the Leitrim Observer understands up to seven ambulances were also deployed.

Commenting on the nights events a Garda spokesperson said, “We put in place a great operation which was a phenomenal success as it involved adjoining Garda divisions.”

Check points were carried out on buses coming in to Carrick-on-Shannon and were also carried out in Roscommon Town; Strokestown; Boyle; Manorhamilton; Sligo; Ballyshannon; Ballymote; Longford; Arva; Cavan and Ballyconnell. Gardai were made aware of the various pick up points and seized “a lot of alcohol” while two 53 seater buses were ordered to turn back as a result of some of the passengers being intoxicated.

Anyone who may be able to assist Gardai is asked to contact (071) 9620021.
