Cardinal Sean Brady

Dear Madam, I wish to take issue with your editorial of May 11th calling for the resignation of Cardinal Brady. The case you make is based on untruths and spurious reasoning. It is untrue that Fr. Brady, as he then was, did nothing. He did what he was asked to do by his bishop.

Dear Madam,

I wish to take issue with your editorial of May 11th calling for the resignation of Cardinal Brady. The case you make is based on untruths and spurious reasoning. It is untrue that Fr. Brady, as he then was, did nothing. He did what he was asked to do by his bishop.

You say it was criminal that he did not do more. This is spurious. Is it now the case that a Garda must dispute with the DPP if a case of his/her is not prosecuted? Should an executive civil servant argue with the Minister or Secretary General of his/her Department in the event that his/her pet project in not being pursued?

In all organisations which are hierarchical in structure, and that is the nature of most institutions in society including the Leitrim Observer, the final decisions are taken not at the bottom but at the top. To have it otherwise would be anarchic.

Another untruth is that Cardinal Brady has let down the “many good priests”. Have they told you this? How many priests have you asked? I know many good priests and none of them say that. If they don’t think they are let down it is not your place to infer that they are.

I think you should now do the honourable thing and withdraw your call for Cardinal Brady’s resignation.

Yours etc.,

Noel Healy,

Amorset,

Manorhamilton.
