Congratulations to NUI Galway and Leitrim County Council for organising an excellent three day seminar on 24th May in honour of John McGahern; Leitrim’s best known writer.
Presentations ranged from Professor Diarmaid Ferriter’s questioning the topic of “True History” - where each person has their own version of the past. Through Cormac O’Malley’s discussion on his father Ernie’s books on his war of independence and civil war experiences.
In apparent contrast we had readings by the Chinese writer and McGahern fan, Yiyun Li. Many new books on John McGahern were also launched.
This letter cannot do justice to the many other contributors and the informative and enjoyable visits we made to areas with close links to John McGahern.
My hope is that this fine example of cultural tourism will continue for many years and that many international attendees will join with locals to discuss ideas and enjoy Leitrim’s many areas of interest and beauty.
