Dear Madam,

Last week, Leitrim and Carrick-on-Shannon in particular, got the opportunity to showcase itself to a national audience with the visit from RTE 2fm’s Ryan Tubridy. His visit, which culminated in the broadcasting of his morning show live from the Bush Hotel was a huge success and the county received excellent coverage.

The people who contributed to the success of his visit and deserve a huge thank you include The Anthony Trollope Society from Drumsna who met Ryan and his team at the station and while Ryan was driven around the town in luxury in Jim Gannon’s vintage car Carrick Cabs looked after his team.

The pupils and staff of the Carrick-on-Shannon Community School who were very welcoming and John Bredin and Sheila McArdle from The Carrick-on-Shannon Heritage Group who, along with a visit to The Workhouse, also shared their knowledge of the area with a very interested Ryan. Thanks also to the staff at The Dock and to Paul and Patsy Garland for an amazing trip on the Shannon on a luxurious cruiser kindly provided by Emerald Star which everyone from the 2fm team thoroughly enjoyed. Thanks also go to The Victoria Walker Dance School,The Millenium Choir and the staff of both The Landmark and The Bush Hotel.

We would also like to pay tribute to the Tidy Towns committee who had, as usual, made a great effort and had the town looking beautiful. Ryan commented on how clean and picturesque the town looked, so well done to all.

The visit of The Tubridy Show, like many other visits including the Entente Florale judging team, proves what can be acheived when everyone works together. The hospitality and friendliness, that is so characteristic of County Leitrim, once again came to the fore.

We must keep this momentum going into 2013 with the year-long celebrations planned for Carrick-on-Shannon 400. We will make this a celebration everyone will be proud of. The year has incredible potential and Leitrim and Carrick-on-Shannon in particular, must work to maximise on this potential. The event will only be as good as the work that goes into it. Lets make 2013, the celebration of Carrick on Shannon 400 a year to remember.

Again a huge thank you to everyone who worked to make the RTE Tubridy Show visit to Carrick-on-Shannon such a great success.

Regards,

Sinéad McDermott,

On behalf of the Leitrim Tourism Steering Committee.
