If you have not been inflicted with a cough, sore throat or the sniffles since the recent gear shift into the cold weather, then you are lucky, but with the sound of coughs and splutters ever increasing, you get the feeling your time will be up soon - welcome to the start of the cold and flu season.
Leitrim Life recently attended a very informative Landmark Hotel Coffee Morning featuring Colm O’Reilly from The Nature Trail, a health food and organic store based in Ballinamore and Mohill. Colm has been dealing with natural remedies and organic foods for over 14 years, so knows exactly the best way to prepare for the Winter season.
The first advice Colm dispensed to the packed meeting was - stock up on organic porridge. Those who eat a bowl each day seem to somehow ward away much illness and it does not have to be taken solely in the morning, oats help many relax and aid sleep before bed.
The Nature Trail stocks up to “2,500 different lines” of supplements, creams, ointments, herbs and foods - so it is important to discuss exactly what you need before you go purchasing. When looking to protect the body from the onslaught and repetitive flu virus the front line of defence is of course “your diet.”
The most popular advice for a healthy body is of course to drink more water, Colm showcased water purifiers as well as the new “bobbles” bottles which purify water for those on the go - whether to school, work or play!
If you have not heard of the wonder herb Echinacea - where have you been? This American herb has been associated with boosting the immune system, stimulating white blood cells that help fight infection and enhancing the body’s ability to dispose of harmful bacteria, chemicals and infected or damaged cells. It can be taken in water as a precautionary to flus or to help combat the symptoms.
The next most popular item on the shelves of The Nature Trail is: Apple Cider Vinegar. Colm called it an “all round product” which helps soothe bacteria in the stomach, aids weight loss and helps ease arthritic problems. This product is also used to reduce blood pressure, strengthen the heart and flush the liver. Colm suggests a tablespoon in apple juice.
Manuka honey also got a big shout out at the meeting, the honey from New Zealand is traditionally used to heal wounds but is now also used by those with high cholesterol, diabetes, cancer, inflammation, eye, ear, and sinus infections and gastrointestinal problems. Those who already take cod liver oil will be interested to hear about Krill Oil which is being sold as easier to absorb and purer than fish oils. The benefits of the oil is reduced cholesterol, faster brain function and clearer vision.
