Local woman Bernie Linnane McBride set up a Facebook page called “Save the Abbey Manor Hotel, Dromahair” last week, and within three days it had over 350 fans and 10,000 hits.
Bernie told the Leitrim Observer that she was “shocked” to see the derelict and abandoned pictures of the hotel on Sarah Stevens Derelict Nation blog.
Bernie has been bowled over by the support to save the historic hotel, located on the Main Street of the village. She said publicans, business people and local residents would love to see the hotel up and running, she said “the village needs the business.” She said there is only one B&B between Dromahair and Sligo. “We need the Abbey Manor.”
Bernie and her supporters are currently investigating who exactly owns the building, they have used local contacts and online registries. When they discover whether it is a bank or a company that owns the listed hotel “then we will decide what we want to do.” Save the Abbey Manor Hotel is not yet an organised group, but with more information Bernie said they hope to organise a large public meeting for the village.
She said they are interested in all ideas, comments and feedback from locals, the strongest contender at the moment would be to turn the hotel into a “local co-op.”
Bernie said, “there will be no more secrets” all the information sourced by the group will be on their Facebook page. Those who are interested in getting involved should join the ‘Save the Abbey Manor Hotel, Dromahair’ Facebook page or email: firstname.lastname@example.org
