It is estimated that half of Leitrim homeonwers paid the €100 household charge before the deadline on Saturday, March 31.

According to Leitrim County Council nearly “5,500 Leitrim households” registered and paid the charge by the deadline. The council are now urging those who failed to make the cut off, to pay the charge plus the penalty before “other collection methods” including legal action are implemented.

A spokesperson for the council said “Leitrim County Council wishes to take this opportunity to thank those who have paid the Household Charge to date ... The final figure of those who paid before 31st March 2012 will be known as soon as the significant volume of postal registrations are processed by the Household Charge Bureau... We are only three months into a newly introduced tax which relies on self-declaration so a conservative estimate of a 50% collection rate nationally at this stage is positive.”

531 householders in Leitrim made the hurried decision to pay the household charge in cash on Saturday at the specially opened Council office just hours before the deadline.

The Household Charge can be paid at: www.householdcharge.ie, Household Charge, PO Box 12168, Dublin 1 or at Aras An Chontae, Carrick-on-Shannon, Co. Leitrim.

Forms are available from any Local Authority Office throughout the county at libraries, post offices and Garda Stations.
