Ignoring the storm

Dear Madam, In response to Cllr Enda Stenson “Councillors in ‘eye of the storm’ - Leitrim Observer, Friday, September 7, page 3.

Dear Madam,

In response to Cllr Enda Stenson “Councillors in ‘eye of the storm’ - Leitrim Observer, Friday, September 7, page 3.

You rightly say that you were elected by the people to serve the people, and are only answerable to the people. As the people, to whom you are answerable, have raised questions about the salaries and expenses of councillors at a time of cutbacks to services for the people, then you must answer them.

Why are all the cuts falling on the people and not on the councillors and high ranking council officials? Why, at a time of crushing austerity, are councillors’ expenses so high? What value and return have the people got for the €600,000 they paid in wages and expenses to councillors whose job it is to ensure services are maintained?

You may be in the ‘eye of the storm’ but ignoring the storm helps nobody. If you truly believe you are answerable to the people then you and all of your colleagues should address the questions they have raised and answer them.

Yours sincerely,

Ronan Gallagher,

Mohill.
