Mini CRFC Home Blitz on Saturday. Both Coach Donal Woods and parent Linda Reynolds are looking for volunteers to help out on the day of our home Blitz. Donal will require parents to assist with supervision and clean up afterwards. If you are available on the day, please talk to Donal or any of the coaches. Parents are asked if they are available to bring food, if they could they contact Linda at 086 3216565 and Linda will advise on the amount and what food is needed e.g. sandwiches/ cakes/ biscuits. Both Linda and the club do not want an excessive amount of food, or waste, so Linda will only require parents to bring a small amount of food. Please call Linda at your earliest convenience so as to make the planning more effective.

Creggs Blitz: Congratulations to every player at every age group that turned out last Saturday on a perfect morning for rugby. Carrick Minis had a very fruitful Blitz and as usual there were some fantastic displays of excellence from the different teams. Carrick Minis were a credit to themselves and their club with both great skill and sportsmanship from each and every player. Every player got to play and rolling substitutes ensured fairness of game time for every player. A big “Thank You” to Creggs RFC for supplying tough competition, fabulous facilities, and friendly hospitality. We hope to return the favour next week at our home Blitz!

End of Season event: The IRFU Blitzes will be played over the month of March. There will be no Blitzes or training on Easter Saturday, March 30. We ‘hope’ to finish our season on the 6th of April 2012 in Leitrim Village. More details to follow.

Ladies’ Team: Carrick-on-Shannon Ladies met Carrickfergus Ladies in the Ulster Plate Final in Armagh, on Sunday last. Carrick started brightly, with a pick-and-go from their Number 8.Catriona Lynch at the scrum down the blind-side making huge ground after the opening minutes which unsettled the Northern women’s game plan. From there it was a forwards dominated game which was managed well by Carrick-on-Shannon’s scrum-half Claire Carty. Tight head prop (C) Kelly Richardson and hooker Catriona Kielty made good ground in contact and Carrick’s usual smother tackles did however produce the goods with frequent turn-over balls thanks to centre Cliodhna O’Donnell, second-row Saoirse O’Flaherty, and full-back Michelle Duffy stealing possession forcing the turn-over. Seven minutes to half-time, the Carrickfergus women picked and drove phase after phase and were rewarded with an unconverted try, leaving the score 5-0 to the Northerners. This was short-lived as the Shannon ladies utilised their speed and a nice off-load to second-row Leona Mulvihill-Farrell from centre Cliodhna O’Donnell saw the pocket-rocket put one under the posts just before half time which was duly converted by vice captain and out-half Marie Clerkin, putting the Southerners 7-5 ahead at half-time. The second half started with a move that involved Claire Carty, Marie Clerkin, Mulvihill-Farrell ended with Clerkin scoring in the corner. Shortly after the restart a Carrickfergus line-out was stolen by second-row Clare McLoughlin and moved out to the wing finding Mulvihill-Farrell’s hands to make the touch under the posts with a sixty metre dash for her second try. The KO saw Michelle Duffy field well and fast ball out to the wing to Martina Flattery who ran from deep to score their third try which was converted well by M. Clerkin. Kelly Richardson did well to hold up a Carrickfergus try but Carrick regained the upper hand to run in five more tries with Carrickfergus replying with two late unconverted tries to leave the final score Carrick-on-Shannon 48-15 Carrickfergus.
