Manor Rangers suffered their second defeat of the 2014/15 Sligo Leitrim Super League season in what was also the North Leitrim side’s first competitive encounter of 2015 when they were beaten on 4 – 3 score line by Merville United on Sunday at the Merville pitch in Sligo.
Alan Hickey put Manor ahead when he found the Merville net five minutes into the game but the home side then got back on level terms and went 2 – 1 ahead by halftime.
Things got worse for Manor in the second half when Merville went 4 – 1 in front. But Manor eventually found their rhythm and hit back with a goal apiece from subs Aaron Hickey and Killian Kerrigan.
Merville for whom Malachy Spratt netted two goals, Conor O’Grady one and Mark McGoldrick one (from a penalty), held out for the win at the end and denied Manor’s late concerted attempts to snatch an equaliser.
Despite Sunday’s defeat Manor continue their reign as Super League table toppers ahead of Merville.
However the current picture that the top of the Super League table presents is somewhat lopsided perhaps in that Manor’s main challengers in the competition, Boyle Celtic and City United, have only played 8 and 7 games, respectively, while the North Leitrim side has played 14.
Meanwhile, Connacht FAI Cup action is the main item on the agenda for Manor this weekend when they face Mayo side, Fahy Rovers on Sunday at 2pm at the Sligo IT Astroturf pitch.
Manor Rangers: Ali Alniyadi; Shane Loughlin, Thomas McDonald, James Glancy, Gary Hickey; Adrian Croal, Colin Ryan; Anthony McDonald, Colm Callinan; Seamus Ryder, Alan Hickey. Subs used Aaron Hickey, Killian Kerrigan, Kieran Brick.
