Club Classic 2012: Another successful Golf Classic, the tenth in total since we started out on fundraising golf classic’s. The weather was favourable for the most part and with over 60 teams competing the competition was as always competitive. 102 points set on Sunday was the mark with no other team breaking the ton, Michael Gallagher, Martin Talbot, Liam Whyte & Damien Duignan dove tailed well to win by 3 from Sean Bohan, Collie Griffin, Shane Kelly & John Coffey on 99 with a better back 9 than Hugh Bracken, Leo Kavanagh, Seamus & Niall Sweeney, 4th placed was claimed by Leo Mulvey, Tom Daly, Sean Gilmartin & Tommy Flynn on 96 with the better back 9 than Keith Duignan, Sean Bohan, Paul O’Brien & Gordon Kavanagh on 96. The Yellow ball competition was won by Liam & Joe Bruen, Kieran Oates & Bearach Doherty, with 45 points. The Birdies was won by Sean Bohan, Nearest the Pin ladies Carmel Stritch, for the Gents Sean Bohan, Longest Drive Ladies Brenda Kelly, Gents David McDermott. The club are again grateful to our very generous sponsor who wishes to remain nameless, this is the umpteen time the same person has sponsored and the success of the classics over the years are due mainly to their generosity. Pike Fishing in Athleague

The Qualifying Competition of the 2012/2013 Kingspan National Pike Championships continue on Sunday June 10th on the River Suck in Athleague. The Championships consist of 10 independent qualifying competitions and a final. The top 5 from each qualifer gets to fish in the final. The top angler in the final will become Ireland’s Kingspan National Pike Champion and will captain the top 10 in the final in an International team competition which will be held in England in 2013. The organisers, the Irish Federation of Pike Angling Clubs will cover the costs of flights, hotel, B&B, coaches etc for the 5 day trip.

To enter the qualifier on Sunday, you must be a member of one of the 70 clubs affiliated to the Federation. If you are not a member of one of these clubs, you can easily join one at the check-in for E10 for the year. A 7 mile stretch of the Suck will be fished on Sunday. 70 anglers will have plently of room to move around. The first qualifier attracted 96 anglers and it is expected that a similar number of anglers from all over the county will be present on Sunday. Interested anglers sould check in at the Bridge Bar in Athleague from 9:30 for fishing 11 to 4. The entry fee is €15 an there is an optional €5 pool for the biggest pike.
