Leitrim Handball claims its second All-Ireland title in the space of a week when Fenagh’s Donal Wrynn and Shane Doonan won the All-Ireland Minor 60 x 30 Doubles title last Saturday.
Wrynn & Doonan won the Minor title beating Cork’s Michael Hedigan and Daniel Relihan in straight sets but there was disappointment for Ladies duo Ciara McLoughlin and Mary Shanely who lost the Junior B Doubles title on Sunday
Cork’s Michael Hedigan and Daniel Relihan battled hard for court space in Abbeylara but in the end the class and power of Donal Wrynn really stood out.
The Fenagh clubman delivered eye-catching looming range shooting with both hands and with his partner, Shane Doonan, chasing down anything on the right, they powered to a convincing 21-14, 21-12 win. The Fenagh duo were simply a class above their opponents, with Doonan in top form killing the ball whenever he got the opportunity.
On Sunday, Ciara McLoughlin and Mary Shanley took on Kilkenny’s Denise Doyle and Megan Clifford in the Ladies decider but unfortunately the Kilkenny duo came out on top on a score line of 21-11, 21-18.
The first game slipped away from the Leitrim pair as they couldn’t get to grips with the Kilkenny serves. The second game was a must win for Leitrim and with some great serving and rallies it looked like the Leitrim pair were going to win, leading at one stage by eight aces, but it wasn’t to be Leitrim’s day and Kilkenny just edged ahead to take the title.
Next Saturday, Donal Wrynn takes on Limerick’s Padraig Quish in The M Donnelly 60x30 All-Ireland Minor Final in Abbeylara at 1.30, the Fenagh man’s third Minor Final of the year.
