Clubs ready for new season

Local clubs throughout Sligo and Leitrim are busy finalising their preparations ahead of the opening round of fixtures in the Sligo/Leitrim & District soccer leagues which get underway for a new season this weekend.

Manor Rangers, under the guidance of new manager Alan Gilligan will begin their Sligo Southern Hotel Super League campaign with a mouth watering tie against one of the form teams of recent years, Boyle Celtic in Boyle on Sunday morning, August 28, ko 11am.

Carrick Town, who will once again be managed by Paddy McGarry will begin their Sligo Pallets Premier League campaign with a home game against Coolaney Utd, also on Sunday moring at 11am.

The curtain-raiser for the season was held on Sunday last in MacSharry Park with Carbury emerging victorious over Ballymote Celtic in the Frank Kennedy Memorial Cup Final.

Michael Flannery opened the scoring for Ballymote in the closing stages of the first half but Carbury hit back after the break.

The scores were level a minute after the restart when Dylan Edwards scored from close range.

It was to get worse for Ballymote when goalkeeper Noel Crawley was given his marching orders and Carbury's Dylan Edwards dispatched the resulting penalty.

Within the next 10 minutes Carbury further extended their lead with Dylan Edwards on target twice more to ensure victory for Carbury.

The Sligo/Leitrim youth, schoolboys & schoolgirls league also gets underway this weekend and there will be plenty of local interest in the opening weekend.

The young footballers from Manor Rangers and Carrick Town will be eager to put into practice what they have learned in training ahead of the new season.

The Carrick Town U-12 footballers will travel to face Ballisodare United on Saturday at 2pm while in U-12 Division One Carrick Town will host Dromore Villa at 11am.

In the U16 Division 1, Carrick Town's U16 team will make teh short journey to face Boyle Celtic on Saturday at 12.30.

The first Manor Rangers team in action this season will be the U18s who will face an away trip to face Dromore Villa at 12.30pm on Saturday. See page 73 for full Sligo Leitrim & District fixtures.
