Recently promoted Leitrim got their Bord Gáis Ladies National League Division 3 campaign off to the prefect start with a convincing win over a more experienced Wexford side in Ballinamore on Sunday last.
BORD GAIS LADIES NATIONAL LEAGUE DIVISION 3
Played in ideal conditions with a dry calm day and sound underfoot conditions, Leitrim dominated this game from start to finish with a performance full of energy with hard running and high work rate all through.
Leitrim's superior fitness was obvious from the outset and their tactic of carrying the ball at a fast pace out of defence setting up quick attacks had the Wexford side struggling to cope for long periods. An indication of Leitrim's overall dominance was the fact that eight different players got on the score sheet over the course of the hour.
In a strong overall team performance, goalkeeper Catherine O'Brien was very assured and made two crucial saves at vital times. Sharon Kerrigan dominated at fullback, while the half back of Claire Owens, Kirby Gilgunn and in particular Anna Conlan were outstanding. Deirdre Ward made a welcome return to the team and put in a very committed display while her midfield partner and captain Sinead Fowley led by example with her relentless runs into the Wexford defence creating several scoring opportunities for the home side. Up front, Aine Tighe, looked a class act with her ball winning ability and drive for scores. She was well supported by the lively Michelle Reynolds and Roisn Curneen, and wing forward Sarah McManus. However, Reynolds spoiled a lot of her good work with some wayward shooting from good scoring positions.
