The County Athletics Finals were held in Ballyleague on Saturday, June 2, as the events were run off over one day this year for the first time.
Well done to all the organisers as everything went very smoothly with no delays on the day. Seamus Sweeney as MC made sure everyone was in the right place at the right time. He did a great job. There was no parade this year as a result but maybe that can be re-introduced next year considering how well the day went.
Croghan Drumlion Cortober had 35 athletes representing the area this year at the finals and they all performed very well, with some great performances from all, even if they didn’t win a medal.
Once again our relay teams led the way this year with two gold medals. There was gold for the U16 Girls team of Christina Beirne, Mairead O’Dowd, Aine O’Dowd and Tess Murtagh. The U13 Mixed relay team of Colin McDonald, Caoimhe O’Dowd, Brian Finn, Ellis Conway, Shane Surlis and Aisling Cryan also won a gold medal.
In the individual events Cristina Beirne won gold in the 100m again, Caoimhe O’Dowd won silver in the U14 100m and Ellis Conway won silver in the U12 100m.
Well done to all who helped train the athletes especially the relay teams. Thanks to all from the area who helped out on the day and thanks to all the parents for attending and cheering on all out athletes.
The swimming county finals were held in Aura Centre Roscommon on June 10. Once again we had a great selection of swimmers from the area competing. All swam brilliantly and we cam away with a good selection of medals.
Aaron Keegan and Susan McGovern both won gold medals. Aaron in the U16 freestyle and Susan in the U16 butterfly. Conor O’Dowd won a bronze medal in the U14 breaststroke and Leanne O’Dowd won a bronze medal in the U10 backstroke. Well done to all the swimmers who competed on the day and special thanks to Diane O’Dowd and Della Beirne who helped organise the swimming during the year.
