Athlone’s HSE National Community Games First Weekend had a distinct silver lining for Leitrim last weekend as the county’s competitors took home silver medals in Indoor Soccer, Contemporary Irish Dancing and swimming.
Kinlough’s Odhran O’Hara followed up on his silver medal of two years ago to claim silver in the U-10 Freestyle in Athlone while Carrick-on-Shannon’s U-13 Boys took home a silver medal in the Indoor Soccer. And there was a final medal for Edwina Guckian’s Drumsna Strawboys in the Contemporary Irish Dancing category.
There was also a bronze medal for Dromahair’s Carrie McDaid in the U-12 Backstroke and Eadaoin Lee in the U-12 Art while Cianna Ruddy claimed fourth place in the U-10 Backstroke B Final.
Carrick’s Indoor Soccer U13 5-a-side team rbeat Limerick 6-5 in the semi-final on Saturday in a pulsating game On Sunday morning they played Kildare in the Final but the exceptionally strong Leinster champions emerged victorious on a score of 7-3.
Odhran O’Hara, who won his heat and semi-final, was just pipped at the post by a mere touch by a Galway swimmer in the final while Carrie McDaid won both her heat and her semi-final before coming third in the semi-final.
Kinlough’sPauric O’Reilly earned a respectable 9th place in the U8 Gymnastics event and Sian Evans who was placed 5th in the Solo singing event. Manorhamilton’s U13 girls relay team swam really well in a very fast heat while also in action in the pool at the weekend were Jack Canny in the U8 freestyle, Eoghan Kearns U12 breaststroke, Shane Walsh U14 breaststroke, and Dermot McLoughlin U14 freestyle.
The results continue Leitrim’s exceptionally good performances in the pool in recent years as is a great boost to the local organising committee as they host the second part of this year’s HSE Connacht Team Finals in mid-June at a lot of venues around the county. The events due to be held next month include Gaelic Football, Hurling, Basketball and a lot of major events that will require a lot of help and assistance throughout the county.
Anyone who is willing to help in any way is asked to contact either their local Community Games Area or Mary Keenan asap.
