Work on Ballinamore hospital to start this year

Work on a €6 million Ballinamore Community Hospital is expected to begin later this year.

Confirmation of the start date was confirmed to local councillor Gordon Hughes and Deputy Frank Feighan at a meeting of the HSE West in Manorhamilton last week.

Damien McCallion, Area Manager, Sligo/Leitrim/West Cavan, said the expected time frame for commencement of building works is Q4 2012, subject to completion of a provider for the Community Nursing Unit (CNU).

He confirmed that the tender has commenced and a procurement team are in place for a provider to operate the CNU (long term care) service.

The services to be provided at the hospital include the above-mentioned Community Nursing Unit, a Primary Care Centre with visiting allied health professionals such as Public Health Nursing, Physiotherapy Services, Occupational Therapy Services, Dietetics, Speech and Language Therapy, and multidisciplinary bookable rooms for other visiting health professionals.

The hospital is to be located on a 10 acre site at Tully and is expected to take 18 months to complete. A preferred contractor has been notified.

Cllr Hughes welcomed the development. “This hospital is badly needed for elderly people in the Ballinamore area who have to go to Carrick and Mohill for treatment and care,” he said.
