Concerns have been raised over the provision of ambulance cover in Carrick-on-Shannon after it emerged that the HSE hired a private ambulance service to provide overtime cover over the weekend.

Cllr Francis Gilmartin said he was “deeply concerned” about coverage in the south Leitrim area and he demanded a guarantee from the HSE that ambulance services would remain in operation in the region.

“As I understand it a private ambulance service was brought in at massive expense to the taxpayer over the weekend. That is simply not acceptable. The HSE has to guarantee that it has the staff to provide cover and that it is prepared to pay the staff to provide that cover,” he told the Leitrim Observer.

Cllr Gilmartin stressed the importance of providing a full-time ambulance service in the community and he said that he hoped the prospective budgetary cutbacks would not compromise the way in which the service was delivered.
