Showcase your community and win money

Leitrim County Council, through its Floral Pride Competition, is once again looking for schools, communities and businesses to enter a competition to showcase their area, whether that be your school grounds, your business premises surrounds or your village or town. Thankfully, this Winter has been much kinder to gardens and many plants and bulbs are in flower before their time so ideal weather to get started on your Floral Pride competition.

Floral Pride is a competition organised annually by Leitrim County Council which offers an opportunity for community/village/town groups, schools and businesses to win cash prizes for their efforts in planting and tidying up their area.

The workshop on April 24th will give you plenty tips on the type of flowers, shrubs and trees to put in, how to get the most form your window boxes, what type of trees and shrubs are best suited to Leitrim gardens and much more. New faces are always welcome as are the communities, schools and businesses who have been involved with the competition for a number of years.

Floral Pride aims to assist and motivate people in the various villages and towns in the County to improve the appearance of “their place”. The competition looks at the number of different groups within a community who work together to improve their area and will also look at the educational and wildlife elements of the entry e.g. growing of native trees, providing attractive floral displays to attract butterflies and other wildlife. The judging involves a short visit to the school, community or business and a tour of the areas included in the entry.

The judging will take place for the Secondary Schools in mid-May and the Primary Schools in June. Judging for other categories will take place in July/August. Entrants will be notified in advance of the exact judging date.

There are a number of prizes in each of the categories and prize money ranges from €300 as top prize in the schools to €600 as top prize in the community categories. The categories for this year’s competition are as follows:

Category 1: Population under 400

Category 2: Population of 400-600

Category 3: Population of 600 plus

Category 4: Primary School Display (enrolment under 60)

Category 5: Primary School Display (enrolment over 60

Category 6: Secondary School Display

Category 7: Business Display

Overall Winner

The school’s element offers an opportunity for children to get involved at an early age in being aware of how the appearance of their school grounds can contribute to the overall look of a village or town.

Entering the Floral Pride competition provides opportunities for Community Groups, Schools and Businesses to win money which can then be re-invested into improving the areas for future years.
