A new exhibition on the history of Irish Language Newsletters and Newspapers is currently being shown in Ballinamore Library.
‘Súil Charad’ is a bilingual exhibition which starts with the efforts of the United Irishmen in promoting the language and goes right up today to the Irish Language weekly newspaper Gaelscéal and websites that provide nuacht as Gaeilge. The exhibition was organised by Séimí Mac Aindreasa, who was reared in the Belfast Gaeltacht and now works as a development officer with Pobal, the umbrella group for Irish organisations in the north of Ireland. Séimí, who has been bringing the exhibition around the county, stated: “the focus of the exhibition was to give people a feel for the development of the language in people’s lives through the examination of Irish language newspapers and newsletter. The project continued to expand as I discovered more and more material of local Irish language communities attempting to get both local and national into the public domain.”
Seán Ó Murchadha, an tOifigeach Gaeilge with Comhairle Chontae Liatroma praised the work put into the exhibition. “I would encourage individuals and groups to come see the exhibition which shows how the language has continued to make itself felt by providing news for the general public. Hopefully the exhibition will encourage more people to seek out Irish language news publications which are available here in the county library and in various shops throughout the county.”
The ‘Súil Charad’ exhibition runs from the 16th- 30th April in the County Library in Ballinamore.
