Carrick goes for Tidy Towns glory

It’s that time of year again. Summer is beginning and more visitors are expected to the lovely town of Carrick-on-Shannon and the Tidy Towns volunteers are swinging into top gear.

It’s that time of year again. Summer is beginning and more visitors are expected to the lovely town of Carrick-on-Shannon and the Tidy Towns volunteers are swinging into top gear.

They are in fact active the whole year round, not perhaps visibly active on the streets but meeting and working out what is needed to be done to keep Carrick attractive to visitor and local alike. The town has been slowly building points for the Tidy Towns competition and are now in the top 40, in a very impressive 38th position, which is a great achievement and one we should all be proud of. Coupled with the success in the Entente Floral Gold in 2010, the town is definitely going for gold again.

But, this wont happen without the input and help of the community at large. If every business, house, apartment, school, club etc became aware and made themselves responsible for a bit of their town we would be more than half way there. Some of the major problems are discarded litter, cigarette ends, weeds, overflowing rubbish bins, unkept boundary walls, the list goes on and chewing gum is a nightmare. It looks unsightly, is nasty to step on and expensive to remove. Leitrim County Council has created a first class walking and cycling track for us to be proud of, so please don’t litter the area while you are enjoying it.

Leitrim County Council has also supplied a van for the workers to use to help collect rubbish and carry tools around whilst helping keep the town tidy. Both Leitrim and Roscommon County Councils are fully supportive of the Tidy Towns project, assisting with clean ups, infrastructure and asking businesses not to litter the roadsides with advertising signs.

Summer is here and shortly the judges for the Tidy Towns will be scrutinising the town. So please get your hanging baskets and flower boxes out as soon as possible. Tidy Towns is supplying 80 baskets around the town, Woodies are sponsoring the flowers for the roundabouts and Glancy’s Supervalue continue their valued support. This is not to ignore the many businesses who help and the many people who supported the church gate collections.

There is a wonderful team of volunteers who carry out maintenance tasks (it’s not all about litter picking) several times a week, it is not just doing something for the town but a great way of meeting people. More volunteers, even just for an hour, are needed.

If you would like to help, please contact us at carricktidytowns@gmail.com or talk to a volunteer in their Tidy Towns visibility jackets as they help Carrick go for gold.
