Denise Murray from Ballinamore was chosen to represent Leitrim in this year’s Dublin City Marathon in the 2012 SPAR SPARTAN Challenge.

Denise completed the Irish Runner 5 mile race in Phoenix Park on Sunday, July 1 in a fantastic time of 51min.

The next race that Denise and the 26 strong team of Spartans will take on is the Fingal 10km in Swords on July 22 followed by the Frank Duffy 10 mile race in August.

Following her selection to represent Leitrim in the challenge Denise said “I feel slightly daunted but extremely excited by the prospect of the challenge ahead of me, it will test my determination, drive and push my fitness level to an all new high. So Leitrim I will do you proud!”

The 26 marathon novices will be guided in their preparation by fitness guru Karl Henry (Operation Transformation) and nutrition expert Paula Mee who are spearheading the campaign.

They have also been put through a Chi-running workshop by former Olympian and triple marathon winner Catherina McKiernan.

Those who wish to follow Denise’s progress, training runs and blog updates can do so via the website http://spartan.spar.ie/ or by visiting SPAR’s Facebook page. Denise will upload maps and stats of her training as well as few words on how she is coping with the Spar Spartan Challenge.

The website also includes motivational, fitness and nutrition videos from the expert panel and will be updated weekly with new content so that anyone can follow the programme.

Denise is looking for plenty of support from the county, so log on to www.spartan.spar.ie and leave some comments and tips!

The SPARTAN Challenge is about ordinary people taking on a personal challenge to improve their health and fitness and, hopefully, inspiring others to do the same.

So when it comes to choosing the ‘King’ or ‘Queen’ of the Spartans judging will be based on determination to succeed, overall improvement and dedication to the challenge.

The Spartan who receives the most overall points will be crowned the winner and will win a trip to the New York Marathon.
