Minor League Game
Garadice Gaels made a promising start to the 2013 13-a-side League campaign with a comfortable 3-8 to 1-3 win over Annaduff on last Sunday morning in Annaduff. Despite the difficult underfoot conditions, both sides served up entertaining fare over the hour in which the final outcome was never in real doubt. First half scores from Conor Gaffney (0-1), Dylan Mimna (1-2), Mark Plunkett (0-1) and Pierce Dolan (0-1) gave the Gaels an interval lead of 1-5 to 1-1. The hosts, who had owned a fair share of possession in the first half, could have, with better accuracy in front of the winners’ posts, closer at the change of sides. On the resumption, encouraged by the safe handling of goalkeeper Darragh McNiff, and powered by a resolute quartet in defence and supplied with ammunition galore from Mark Plunkett and Fergal McTague the Gaels built on the lead with two “air mail specials” from distance by Mark Plunkett, and Pierce Dolan climaxing a memorable performance with two punched goals and a point
in the fourth quarter.
The Garadice panel was Darragh McNiff, Rory McTague, Ronan Maxwell, Donal McCabe, Pierce Dolan (2-2), Mark Plunkett (0-2), Declan Flanagan, Michael Prior, Dylan Mimna (1-2), Conor Gaffney (0-1), Adam Kearns, Killian Lavin and Ciaran O Haire.
The proliferation of expensive cards and gifts and expressions of undying affection has been underway in the days leading up to February 14th St. Valentine’s feast. There are many points of view on how the custom is associated with St. Valentine. It maybe that Valentine’s death on February 14th 269 coincided with the old Roman love feast of Lupercalia. Another theory advanced is that the imprisoned Valentine is said to have exchanged letters of affection with his jailer’s daughter. There are at least three saints of the name from the third century –one a martyr in Africa, another a bishop, and a third - the most likely candidate for the title-a Roman priest and martyroriginally interred in St. Hypolyrus’ cemetery in Rome. The feast is not included in the official calendar of saints where the fourteenth is shared by St. Cyril and St. Methodius. The martyred saint’s body was interred in St. Hypolyrus’ cemetery in Rome, and almost sixteen centuries later, taken to Ireland by a Carmelite priest Rev. John Spratt in 1835 to be re-interred in the Carmelite Church in Whitefriar St. Dublin.
