The late John Maguire
It was indeed with great sadness that we learned of the death of John Maguire peacefully at his home in Drummagh, Summerhill, Carrick-on-Shannon on Thursday morning, February 7th last. John had been diagnosed with an illness three years ago and he had fought it with great courage and dignity over that time.
John was the eldest son of the late Alo and Nora Maguire, Highland Terrace, Cortober, Carrick-on-Shannon. Alo, a native of Kiltyclogher, Co. Leitrim worked for Co. Leitrim VEC while Nora was a member of the well-known Cryan family of Drumlion, Carrick-on-Shannon. In 1987, John married Kathy Duignan from Ballinamore and they have two sons Liam and Mark.
John worked most of his life in the Parts Department of Lunney’s Garage, Cortober and before that when it was the P.M.P.A. Garage. In more recent years, he worked for Casey’s in Carrick-on-Shannon and set up his own garage with Paul O’Brien a few years ago. John had a big passion for cars and knew every part in them and where to get them. John’s other big passion was politics and he was a very active member of the Fine Gael party. John worked in many elections and loved the drama of the counts on Election Night.
John was a perfectionist and things could only be done one way - the right way. Fr. Frank Garvey P.P. St. Mary’s described John very well in his homily and said “John was as straight as a die”. This was very true. John worked in many community organisations and was an active member of Carrick Junior Chamber, Carrick Credit Union and Carrick Festival Committee. John was a great family man and a man of great faith. He also loved walking by the Shannon and reading.
John’s removal took place from his home on Friday evening, February 8th last at 6.30pm to St. Mary’s Church, Carrick-on-Shannon. His funeral Mass took place on Saturday at 12 noon with huge crowds in attendance on both days, showing the esteem in which he and his family were held. His burial took place afterwards in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
John is also survived by his brothers Declan (Dublin) and Denis (USA), sisters-in-law, brother-in-law, mother-in-law Eileen Duignan, Ballinamore, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbours and many friends.
To everyone connected with John, especially his loving wife Kathy, sons Liam and Mark, brothers Declan and Denis and extended family, we tender our deepest sympathy. His death at the young age of 54 is deeply regretted. May his brave soul Rest in Peace.
