Special St. Patrick’s Day Celebrations
Carrick Chamber is asking all businesses, clubs and organisations to come out and take part in our one-off special celebrations to mark the 400th anniversary of our town’s founding. We have been working closely with many businesses and other groups, including local branches of the Inland Waterways Association of Ireland for the Water Parade, to ensure the best St Patrick’s Day ever seen in Carrick. We are very pleased with the huge response we’re getting. We will have some very special guests, a host of free children’s entertainment and a spectacular finale. Full details will be revealed next week.
Carrick 400 tree planting
Everything is in readiness for the next major event in the Carrick 400 Celebrations which is a special tree planting ceremony to be held in the Linear Park (opposite Landmark Court), Carrick-on-Shannon at 12 noon on this Friday, 1st March.
The event is being co-ordinated by the Environmental Department of Leitrim County Council. The tree planting serves two purposes - the commemoration of Carrick’s 400 years of existence and the raising of awareness of the importance of trees in our world as we commence National Tree Week.
It is planned to plant two clusters of four semi mature trees at this special ceremony. One batch of four trees will be planted by representatives from each of the four Carrick-on-Shannon schools - Carrick Community School, the Gaelscoil, the Girls Primary School and the Boys Primary School.
Each school will then present a parchment containing the names of all pupils and staff of the four schools as at the date of planting, to a representative of Carrick-on-Shannon Historical Society for placing later in the year, in a time capsule which will contain data relating to the various Carrick 400 events.
The second cluster of four semi mature trees will be planted by representatives of four of the many organisations that are involved in the development and ongoing maintenance of Carrick-on-Shannon - the County Council, the Chamber of Commerce, The Tidy Towns Committee and Carrick on Shannon Active Age Committee. Plaques will also be unveiled beside each cluster of trees.
As well as commemorating Carrick 400 in trees, the event is aimed at raising environmental awareness among the population of Carrick on Shannon, and especially the school going generation, of the importance of trees in our lives.
Table quiz in aid of Croghan National School will take place in Glancy’s Bar, Cortober, Carrick-on-Shannon on Friday, March 1st at 9pm. Teams of 4 €20. Raffle on night with first prize of 1 night 4* hotel break with €100 spending money. All welcome.
Kiltoghert Pioneer Centre meeting

Free Digital Library
It’s all digital things these days! The library is no different! You may not be aware that Leitrim County Library offers a free digital library to its members. Membership of the library is free too! All you need is an eBook reader or a laptop or a computer or a smart phone. Unfortunately this service will not work with the popular Kindle yet but the library service expects it will in the future and say negotiations are ongoing with Kindle.
You can access the eBook service which has both eBooks and audio books at the library website at www.leitrimlibrary.ie and click digital library on the left hand side of the page. If you click the Getting Started link there are useful instructions here on how to download your books etc. This is a great service if you can not get to the library or are on holidays and like a good read by the pool. The library will be adding more titles as the year progresses.
